Southdown Way Memorial

In 1940 Joseph Oestermann was shot down in his Ju88 Bomber plane part of the Luftwaffe KG54 Bomber Group. The Bomber was shot down on August 13th 1940, by a Hurricane fighter plane from RAF Tangmere 601Squadron early that morning. Two other crew members who were with Joseph bailed out of the jU88 and were captured. The Memorial can be found on the Southdown way at Phillis Wood Down near Treyford and the Harting Downs near the Hooksway and the Royal Oak Pub.

  1. Wow. What a testament to the English that they memorialized their foe. I’m reminded of the Iliad, which concerns the death of Hector, the great foe of the Greeks.
